This unique welcome center was created for the Longbush Ecosanctuary in Gisborne, New Zealand. Designed by architect Sarosh Mulla, the building was realized by 88 volunteers with materials donated to the project by 88 sponsors. The structure is divided into three wood-clad volumes and unified under a steel and fabric canopy. Each unit is painted black and red and supported by a foundation of handmade brick. Atop the main structure, there is a rooftop deck, accessible by a greenwood ladder. Each section is an environmental education space for teaching guests about the ecosanctuary and getting them involved in volunteering. The facilities are free and open to school groups, ecologists, tourists, and curious community members. As students, participants learn in an open-air classroom and take part in the site’s ongoing environmental restoration project.
