Called Little Thumb, this bread grating set was created by Elena Biondi, a postgraduate student-designer at Lund University in Sweden. Featured by LU’s The Tomorrow Collective, the kit includes a metal grater, a wooden box, a glass jar, and a mortar and pestle. The grater and box system allows the user to shave off fresh bread crumbs with minimal mess. Additionally, the box doubles as a cutting board and features a panel cut with holes that collect crumbs. The crumbs can then be brushed into wooden lid, which doubles as the mortar to the pestle, and crushed into a fine dust. The grain of one’s labors can then be tapped into the glass jar and store for months, or as long as it lasts. With such a design as Little Thumb, there is no need for commercial bread crumbs. One can save money and waste by making bread crumbs at home. The resulting ingredient will be just as high in quality as one’s favorite bread.
