The Frame Chair was designed and made by the Dublin-based studio Notion in collaboration with the County Down weavers of Mourne Textiles. Revising Notion’s 2014 Dowel Chair, the Frame experiments with textiles and aluminum. Similarly to the Dowel Chair, the new design features a back and armrest crafted from wood in a basket-like shape. The Frame, however, is naturally finished instead of painted white, outfitted with anodized aluminium legs, and cushioned with Mourne Textiles’ handwoven upholstery, shown here in two-tone gray and ochre or yellow. Blending contemporary and traditional techniques, the chair is CNC-machined (for the curved ash wood seat pan) and woven by hand on custom-made looms (for the fabric). Part of the Liminal exhibition and The Year of Irish Design 2015, the Frame Chair is now showing at Salone del Mobile in Milan and will soon travel to New York, Dublin, and Eindhoven as well.
