This sleek and functional design from Japanese designer Mikiya Kobayashi is an unconventional take on a classic silhouette. While the back and overall shape are reminiscent of the classic and simple style seen in Bauhaus-era dining chairs, the use of rope and leather makes YC1 entirely unique. Not only does the woven incorporation of these materials into the wooden frame make for an aesthetically pleasing piece, but it also serves to enhance the object’s ergonomic value. This tension that is created by material interaction is representative of the work’s overall effect; YC1 presents the best of both form and function, offering a distinct balance between comfort and modern design.

Lizzie

Lizzie Wright is an aspiring artist and designer with a passion for the written word. While she works on her BFA in Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), she spends her (rare) spare time riding around Providence on her trusty Cannondale and drinking lots of coffee. She is especially fascinated by the dichotomy between aesthetic form and function, which has an immense influence on her work. As a lover of the natural world, Lizzie plans to focus on Nature, Culture, and Sustainability Studies to pursue a more efficient future for design. Read more by visiting her website
