Despite their somewhat unassuming appearance, Brandon Clifford and Wes McGee’s Ply Shelves are highly complex and have been widely recognized: they have won the titles for both furniture design and people’s choice in the 2011 ‘AZ Awards’ as well as being named Architectural Record’s ‘Product of the Year’ in 2010. Created using 3D modeling, the variable thickness shelves combine the conventionally separate system of wall-mounted brackets into a singular, sculpted form. Cleverly concealed, the brackets are spaced 16 inches apart to align with wall studs while CNC-parts with low-VOC finishes are designed to reduce waste by optimizing material yield. Laminated plywood from managed forests gives the shelves an almost organic quality, which provides a refreshing contrast to traditionally utilitarian design.
