Italian designer Antonio Arico saw the 2015 Design Boomart Stockholm Exhibition as the perfect opportunity to repurpose these four pieces rooted in his family history. “OLDWAYS: a little wooden collection” draws on tradition to create pieces that, although described as “basic” and “casual” by the artist, are undeniably modern in their simplicity. The cheese grater has a clean geometry that clashes with its rustic origin; made from a tomato can with nail-drilled holes, the object is a symbol of honesty and purity rather than fashion or glamour. Arico’s hand-cut wooden utensils also embody his ideal, their forms so graphic that they more closely resemble sketches than reality. Continuing to follow the “old ways” of making in his instinctively shaped cutting boards and imperfect rolling pins, each piece in the collection carries his unique artisanal touch and pays homage to his cultural heritage. Inspired by the simple objects seen hanging in his own Grandfather’s kitchen, the series has a strong connection to the artist’s own identity and “the will to go back to simple things; a sense of light, pureness and spontaneity!”

Lizzie

Lizzie Wright is an aspiring artist and designer with a passion for the written word. While she works on her BFA in Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), she spends her (rare) spare time riding around Providence on her trusty Cannondale and drinking lots of coffee. She is especially fascinated by the dichotomy between aesthetic form and function, which has an immense influence on her work. As a lover of the natural world, Lizzie plans to focus on Nature, Culture, and Sustainability Studies to pursue a more efficient future for design. Read more by visiting her website
