There’s no denying that cooking is a creative process. But Valencia design studio Totpoc explores the lesser-known art of serving and plating with Oboo, recently shown as a part of the “Diseño al Plato” exhibition during Milan Design Week 2015 . Inspired by Majano, a Spanish structure made of balancing stones, the modular wooden plate has seven different building blocks which can be adapted to suit any recipe or culinary need. The playful geometric forms are made from turned maple wood to offer endless arrangements for the cook, like a child stacking blocks. Although Oboo was created with function in mind, Totpoc’s focus on the interaction between user and product places this imaginative collection somewhere between a tool and a toy. The simple, sculptural food stand is to eating what the pedestal is to sculpture, equating fine cuisine to a work of art.

Lizzie Wright is an aspiring artist and designer with a passion for the written word. While she works on her BFA in Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), she spends her (rare) spare time riding around Providence on her trusty Cannondale and drinking lots of coffee. She is especially fascinated by the dichotomy between aesthetic form and function, which has an immense influence on her work. As a lover of the natural world, Lizzie plans to focus on Nature, Culture, and Sustainability Studies to pursue a more efficient future for design. Read more by visiting her website
