Netherlandian designer Vincent Bos envisions products that can affect the relationship between the urban man and the environment. Made from natural materials like oak and porcelain, a technique the artist picked up in Jingdezhen, his “Wall Elements” collection is a continuation of his environmentally-conscious, user-focused practice. Despite its clean, modern lines, the series of handmade birdhouses was created for outdoor use, with durability and versatility in mind; the modular system can be uniquely assembled to make a garden element for any space, and the sturdy wall mount is suitable for either a wall or fence. The Porcelain Oak Birdhouse and Wood Birdhouse are combined in the final piece, Wall Elements Ceramic Birdhouse, through minimal tree-like forms in a whimsical play on natural imagery. “Designed to bring nature and the elements back to the urban man” so that “birds can have a display spot in the city and in the Vinex districts,” Bos’ playful yet functional outdoor products consider every dimension of user interaction. Lizzie Wright is an aspiring artist and designer with a passion for the written word. While she works on her BFA in Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), she spends her (rare) spare time riding around Providence on her trusty Cannondale and drinking lots of coffee. She is especially fascinated by the dichotomy between aesthetic form and function, which has an immense influence on her work. As a lover of the natural world, Lizzie plans to focus on Nature, Culture, and Sustainability Studies to pursue a more efficient future for design. Read more by visiting her website
