Garfield said it best: “I hate Mondays.” But what if there was a way to wake up with a smile instead of a scowl at the start of your week? Created by Global Design firm IDEO for Studio 360’s Redesigns series, Lolzzz was conceived with that exact goal in mind; the clever alarm clock doesn’t ring, but rocks back and forth with laughter to put a smile on your face the moment you open your eyes. All you have to do is set it upright to snooze, or tickle its “bellybutton” to get it to laugh even harder. The design is impressively considerate of user interaction; only a child’s laughter is used because our brains naturally respond with a smile – and smiling releases endorphins. “We tend to think that we smile because we’re happy. But it also works the other way around. Putting a smile on your face prompts your brain to behave as if you’re in a good mood. So the more we smile on Mondays, the better our Mondays are likely to be.” The clock will even email you the story behind that week’s laughter just in time for your morning commute. Part of IDEO’s “Monyay” series, Lolzzz is sure to brighten your day – and look good on your nightstand.

While she works on her BFA in Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), she spends her (rare) spare time riding around Providence on her trusty Cannondale and drinking lots of coffee. She is especially fascinated by the dichotomy between aesthetic form and function, which has an immense influence on her work. As a lover of the natural world, Lizzie plans to focus on Nature, Culture, and Sustainability Studies to pursue a more efficient future for design. Read more by visiting her website
