Architecture, Italians do it better

Casa Salina

This dream-like holiday retreat by Viviana Pitrolo and Francesco Puglisi is further proof that Italians do it best. Erected from the remains of an ancient palace that dates back to the year 800 in the countryside town of Scicli, the building pays respect to its heritage with exposed local stone, traditional lime flagstones, and high stone walls that surround the property. Such raw accents are typical of Iblei architecture and blend well with Casa Salina’s scenic rural setting, surrounded by indigenous olive and carob trees.

An internal courtyard, lush entrance garden, and infinity pool complete the villa from outside-in for an incredibly lavish getaway; lounge by the pool, relax beneath a tree, or enjoy the gorgeous architecture that lies within. Sleek furniture custom designed and hand-crafted by local artisans provides a subtle contrast to the building’s rough-hewn walls and exposed wood beam ceilings, in a beautiful marriage of past and present. And, of course, the incredibly expansive kitchen leaves enough counter space to roll out some fresh pasta.

Lizzie Wright is an aspiring artist and designer with a passion for the written word. While she works on her BFA in Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), she spends her (rare) spare time riding around Providence on her trusty Cannondale and drinking lots of coffee. She is especially fascinated by the dichotomy between aesthetic form and function, which has an immense influence on her work. As a lover of the natural world, Lizzie plans to focus on Nature, Culture, and Sustainability Studies to pursue a more efficient future for design. Read more by visiting her website
