Grovemade has been turning out a wide variety of products for years — from desk collections to device sleeves and covers — using a selection of natural materials that has made them known for their special attention wood and leather craftsmanship. Recently, the Portland-based company launched its first watch collection.
Most wooden watches on the market today simply replace the steel components with a more natural material. Grovemade challenged this convention, together with product designer Stefan Andrén, by designing the Wood Watch from the ground up: a custom internal timekeeping module, which holds the movement, built by an experienced overseas watch manufacturer; a stainless steel casing locally manufactured in Portland, Oregon, providing strength and durability; and their signature vegetable-tanned leather strap complete with hand-sanded and hand-oiled maple or walnut watch faces (available in round or square).
“We were looking to design a watch that simplifies time telling to its essence,” says Stefan Andrén. This is achieved through the 12 circular windows which form eclipse-like shapes to peacefully communicate the hours and minutes as they pass.
Once more, Grovemade has succeeded in making a beautiful product using quality natural material – back to purity, back to simplicity.
