The Big Little House

The choice to renovate rather than relocate is leaving many families with far more generous accommodations than they could have hoped for, like this Paris loft. Fitzroy North, Melbourne was the site of the latest domestic facelift: endearingly named “the big little house” by Nic Owen Architects, the two story home extension features 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a study in just 140 square meters that accommodate local historical restrictions. “With clever design small spaces can feel larger than they actually are,” explain the designers, who through vaulted ceilings and abundant natural light have created an interior that defies dimensionality. A crisp white kitchen and generous floor-to-ceiling storage distinguish the efficient, minimal residence. Their liberal use of natural finishes and recycled materials blends well with the home’s paired-down aesthetic and an overall environmentally-conscious philosophy – the renovation even features passive solar design. Despite these modern virtues, “the big little house” retains authentic Victorian details, like its historic terrace. In the face of endless restrictions, from limited space to historical value, Nic Owens sensitively carried out an addition that marries efficiency and style.

Lizzie

Lizzie Wright is an aspiring artist and designer with a passion for the written word. While she works on her BFA in Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), she spends her (rare) spare time riding around Providence on her trusty Cannondale and drinking lots of coffee. She is especially fascinated by the dichotomy between aesthetic form and function, which has an immense influence on her work. As a lover of the natural world, Lizzie plans to focus on Nature, Culture, and Sustainability Studies to pursue a more efficient future for design. Read more by visiting her website
