Often the best way to make something new is to rediscover something old. The designers at Studio PS in collaboration with Spoor38 did just this in finding inspiration in previously abandoned factory lights. While traveling France in search of exceptional vintage relics, a small quantity of lamps was found and immediately caught their eye. They were unusually small as their previous occupation had been to hang over workbenches in a glass factory, but the designers saw potential in giving them new life, and procured all 50 pieces. Working by first disassembling the lamps to understand their design, they next decided to accent the products with a fresh material choice. After some experimentation, a concrete part was incorporated into the lamps, adding a new curve to its silhouette. Then, through the addition of some tactful color choices, the lamps were able to shed all the dead weight of their past and venture into the rose-colored land of vintage design. The limit of the find makes each lamp a treasure, with a unique number to signify its production order as in an edition of prints. The design evokes the industrial aesthetic of the past with a fresh wind of the present, and would be a centerpiece in any owner’s home.

Nathaniel Barlam

Nathaniel

Amid the unrest of earning his Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from RISD, Nathaniel manages to find the time to read, write, hang out with friends, play drums, and listen to music. Nathaniel has learned a lot about architecture firsthand thanks to opportunities to live and work in Rome and Brooklyn during the past year. Coming from a family with strong roots in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Nathaniel has always maintained a strong love for NYC especially, and after his studies finish up in Providence he may move there for a while. He hasn't decided yet. You can connect with him via Linkedin or by visiting his Portfolio page.
