Created by Aaron Neubert Architects, the 200 square foot “Black Box” provides a scenic and secluded workspace for a professional technology author and columnist. Situated atop a tree-lined hill in a suburban Los Angeles neighborhood, the studio can be accessed via ascending outdoor stairs that are sheltered by a canopy of foliage. A pair of telescoping doors opens onto the floating geometric space whose minimal form and dark stained cladding offer a distinct contrast to the building’s lush natural surroundings. The highlight of the studio is a single “picture window,” which occupies the entirety of one wall and invites the occupant to explore endless views and stunning scenery that from inside. While the elegant design of “Black Box” is inspiration enough for the working writer, its explicit spatial separation from the writer’s personal residence – located just below – creates a mental divide between home and work that can enhance focus and increase productivity. Perfectly simple, Aaron Neubert’s “Black Box” studio does not focus on material, color, or form, but space — something we often take for granted.

Lizzie

Lizzie Wright is an aspiring artist and designer with a passion for the written word. While she works on her BFA in Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), she spends her (rare) spare time riding around Providence on her trusty Cannondale and drinking lots of coffee. She is especially fascinated by the dichotomy between aesthetic form and function, which has an immense influence on her work. As a lover of the natural world, Lizzie plans to focus on Nature, Culture, and Sustainability Studies to pursue a more efficient future for design. Read more by visiting her website
