Our vision affects nearly every facet of daily life, yet any lens-wearer can attest to the difficulty of finding a perfect fit. Adjustable wire nose pads can can keep your glasses in place with little comfort, while generic plastic frames slide this way and that. But Berlin-based eyewear manufacturer Mykita has worked hard to find a middle ground for the modern individual; “My Very Own” (or MVO) combines 3D scanning, parametric design, and additive manufacturing to produce a pair of specs that fits the unique contours of each wearer’s face. Once you’ve chosen from their stylish selection in store, a 3D scan of your face provides Mykita with the exact measurements needed to create a precisely tailored, anatomic form. More than ten variable parameters make up the design, allowing for microscopic adjustments to frame width, angle of nose pads and bridge span, even the length and radius of the temples. Throughout the process, designers look beyond the traditional fit of the frames to a variety of equally important factors that vary from person to person — like centering the lens over the eye while maintaining aesthetic proportions. MVO’s carefully crafted frame not only enhances vision, but it is also designed to compliment each wearer’s unique appearance. The company’s innovative approach demonstrates a drastic change to a centuries-old optics archetype, launching a “Digital Revolution of Bespoke Design.” MVO will be available in both Mykita Shops (Berlin, Paris, New York, Monterrey, Cartagena, Zurich, Zermatt, Vienna, Tokyo) as well as select opticians beginning this spring.

While she works on her BFA in Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), she spends her (rare) spare time riding around Providence on her trusty Cannondale and drinking lots of coffee. She is especially fascinated by the dichotomy between aesthetic form and function, which has an immense influence on her work. As a lover of the natural world, Lizzie plans to focus on Nature, Culture, and Sustainability Studies to pursue a more efficient future for design. Read more by visiting her website
