“The aim was to create an object that [dwells] in our house in a silent and careful way, like a character able to follow us through different moments and environments.” Tommaso Caldera’s ELMA floor lamp illuminates its surroundings in such reticent tones as to conceal its function; the modest metal diffuser radiates light across surrounding walls and ceilings to cast a gentle glow within the space. Produced by Milan-based creative lab Incipit, the design draws on traditional nomadic lamps to create a simple and cohesive form. A bent and milled plywood handle introduces both movement and balance to the portable floor lamp, in a brilliant natural contrast to ELMA’s painted aluminum body. Available in a variety of colors – white, anthracite, dark red, and sea blue – the brilliant piece is sure to brighten up your home. Caldera presents a thoughtful investigation of shape and function as it relates to human-product interaction across history.

Lizzie Wright is an aspiring artist and designer with a passion for the written word. While she works on her BFA in Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), she spends her (rare) spare time riding around Providence on her trusty Cannondale and drinking lots of coffee. She is especially fascinated by the dichotomy between aesthetic form and function, which has an immense influence on her work. As a lover of the natural world, Lizzie plans to focus on Nature, Culture, and Sustainability Studies to pursue a more efficient future for design. Read more by visiting her website
