“Snap. Explore. Create.” The makers at huzi design recall a simpler time when things were made to last and simplicity was not the exception, but the rule. Inspired by the classic wooden building blocks that characterize our formative years, COSMOS lets people of all ages play with more than just earth-bound structures – to infinity and beyond. A series of elegant, wooden pieces with magnetic connections form the Shuttle, Rocket, Satellite, Lander, and Planet – though you can easily interchange the 28 pieces with 58 points of connection for a “universe” of possibilities. Just like actual locking mechanisms, the patented Neodymium magnets come together with a satisfying snap that makes them fun for kids and adult alike.  But perhaps the best feature is their refined aesthetic and sophisticated craftsmanship; made from solid beech wood, each exposed part is sanded by hand to reveal its own unique grain, while others are given a smooth matte white or soft touch black finish to complement the material’s raw simplicity. Gentle curvilinear forms subtly suggest their cosmic reference with such grace that you just might let your kids leave their toys out – or you may even get some of your own.  COSMOS is ultimately “a tribute to the vision, intellect and courage of humankind, who have overcome challenges and pushed boundaries.” The designers hope that their collection will serve to inspire a scientific imagination in its users – be they children or adults – and perhaps “inspire a whole generation” to aspire to space travel and cosmic careers. You can get your own set now if you back their kickstarter for at least $25.

Lizzie Wright is an aspiring artist and designer with a passion for the written word. While she works on her BFA in Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), she spends her (rare) spare time riding around Providence on her trusty Cannondale and drinking lots of coffee. She is especially fascinated by the dichotomy between aesthetic form and function, which has an immense influence on her work. As a lover of the natural world, Lizzie plans to focus on Nature, Culture, and Sustainability Studies to pursue a more efficient future for design. Read more by visiting her website
