Less is more and simplicity is the essence of beauty. These two complementary ideas are the foundation on which Andrew Faris creates his unique series of artworks. It started at the Kent State University, where Faris began to establish his outlook on art, which he then refined in Switzerland, as he learned from Ruedi Rüegg – a renowned graphic artist. After working at the Sapient studio in San Diego and completing a stint as Art Director at Yahoo in Los Angeles, Faris founded his own studios, one for design projects, and the other dedicated solely to his personal work. But in all of his projects, simplicity was and remains key.

In an increasingly complex and competitive society sternly ruled by technology and stainless robotic hands, there is impassioned need for artistic respite.

In his own words, the ‘less is more’ concept is “innate in my perspective on form, color and composition. In an increasingly complex and competitive society sternly ruled by technology and stainless robotic hands, there is impassioned need for artistic respite.” Admiring his latest series of images one is immediately struck by their surreal nature. They feature powerful contrasts, both visual and conceptual. Vibrant canvases completed with precise abstract patterns and vivid colors are placed in frozen landscapes full of organic textures, featuring a limited palette of white, gray, blue and brown tones. It’s a simple yet effective pairing that makes you question what you’re seeing: is it a digital composite image or something else? On closer inspection it becomes clear that this is a clever juxtaposition that mirrors modern life vs. untamed nature. The carefully painted acrylic canvases contrast the wild beauty of the mountains, grass, rocks and flowing water. Beauty can be found in both worlds, but seeing them together helps the viewer truly appreciate their unique power. Currently for sale, some of these artworks are still available to buy on the artist’s website.
