At the 2015 Habitare Design Fair in Finland a wonderful and surreal installation captured the imagination of the visitors, competing for attention with the innovative products on display. Designed by environmental artist Kaisa Berry of BOTH, the art installation used 1,100 suspended white umbrellas to create a unique space where fantasy and modern art were brought together in perfect harmony. Kaisa and Timo Berry revealed that “the aim is to approach the often over-serious design scene by using art, stage design, and a bit of kitsch. We also offer adults an opportunity to play a little.” Inspired by the famous Mary Poppins, the umbrella installation also featured a beautiful light blue surface on the floor, representing the sky, and white seating that looked like abstract clouds. An aerial acrobatic performance added gracefulness and a human connection with the dreamlike environment. Visitors could sit underneath the art installation and enter the realm of a modern Mary Poppins, where fantasy and contemporary art offered a unique respite from the fast-paced world of modern product design.
