A love of travel along with modern design and antique elements are brought together in this 19th century apartment located in Berlin. The interior was designed and styled by Annabell Kutucu in collaboration with Michael Schickinger. Original vintage features are still preserved on the apartment’s ceiling, where decorative stucco moldings with flowery details bring antique elegance to the otherwise modern and masculine interior. Natural wood is used profusely throughout the living space, from the reclaimed wood dining table to classic oak parquet or flooring boasting more exotic species of wood. The owner’s penchant for traveling is nuanced around the home. In the kitchen area, large open shelves display both frequently used dinnerware as well as artifacts or traditional items from far away places, while in the bathroom, African sculptures and an old wooden chair contrast the sleek contemporary décor. A vintage stove and old tiles along with a retro filing cabinet remind of the apartment’s past. The color palette features warm brown tones, shades of gray and beige, as well as white and black. But throughout the apartment, there’s a clever play of contrasts, whether it’s between old and new, familiar or exotic, rustic or modern, smooth or textured, all blended in a cohesive and unitary living space where style and comfort coexist.
