Ugo Rondinone’s installations and artworks usually combine vibrant colors and dreamlike elements. ‘Seven Magic Mountains’ is no exception. Born in Switzerland and now living and working in New York, Ugo Rondinone has exhibited his work in various iconic venues, but none can match the majestic beauty of the Nevada desert. This installation was commissioned by the Art Production Fund, New York and Nevada Museum of Art in Reno and is located approximately half an hour drive south of Las Vegas, along Interstate 15.

“Seven Magic Mountains is an artwork of thresholds and crossings, of seclusion and gathering, of balanced marvels and excessive colors, and the contrary air between the desert and the city lights,” says the artist. The seven pillars are reminiscent of both meditative sculptures and totems. Large rocks are perfectly balanced one on top of the other; the 30-35 feet tall columns can appear either as arranged in a straight line or as a cluster, depending on the viewing angle. The artificial and natural are placed in direct contrast; these man-made structures are painted in intense colors that remind of the neon lights glowing throughout Las Vegas, yet they are made of natural rock, just like the landscape they now inhabit. The installation will remain in place for two years and visitors can take a closer look at the artwork starting from May 11 2016. Photography by Gianfranco Gorgoni.
