Created with functionality in mind, the bar cart is a mid-century modern item that has made a stylish comeback in recent years. The ‘Baron’ bar cart is a perfect example of how modern design can enhance a merely practical product to transform it into an accent furniture piece which demands attention. Made by Beirut-based Studio Caramel, this bar cart was commissioned by the FaR Architects studio, the practice in charge of designing the recently opened Baron restaurant. “Three important characteristics informed our thinking. First, the chef and owner’s vision of the space (where everything – food or drink preparation included – can be seen by guests). Secondly, the architecture of the restaurant and finally, the restaurant’s particular location, in Mar Mikhaël, one of the most fashionable neighborhoods of Beirut”, Rami Boushdid, co-founder of Studio Caramel explains. The cart perfectly integrates into the interior design scheme where Thonet-inspired chairs are placed alongside natural materials, including wood and marble. Practical and refined at the same time, the bar cart creates a focal point in the restaurant and admiring its design it’s easy to see why. Dark walnut wood is complemented by bright brass accents and black painted steel, while wheels inspired by penny-farthings add a distinct vintage vibe. It’s a perfect blend of contemporary style and function with a nod to the unmistakable elegance of the past. Photography by Noor Semaan.
