The striking POPek artwork by London-based artist Whatshisname is inspired by the famous Balloon Dog created by Jeff Koons, but pushes the concept further by adding a playful twist. The squatting dog statue joins two similar designs previously made by Whatshisname, the Good Boy Floor Lamp and the Good Puppy Table Lamp; all of them challenge convention and propose a lighthearted take on modern design. “The purpose of the artwork is to stimulate inspiration, unleash creativity and evoke a sense of wonder by changing common patterns of thinking. The ordinary object turns into unexpected and unorthodox. The artwork is meant to refresh viewer’s mind and wash off the boredom of everyday life,” explains the artist. Produced in a limited edition, the fiberglass statue stands tall at 4 feet and features a glossy finish that makes it even more conspicuous. Starting from the 1st of September 2016, pop art collectors and contemporary art aficionados will be able to order the artwork in three different sizes directly from the artist’s website. The largest version is 120cm tall and will be produced in a limited number of 10 statues, with the price available on request. The other two versions measure 23 cm and 12 cm, priced at £270 and £110 respectively. If you want to see more of the artist’s work, head over to his website. Buy here.
