Admired from a distance, this imposing white elephant looks like a sculpture made of stone, clay, or gypsum using traditional tools. On closer inspection, however, the viewer discovers that the large-scale artwork is actually made of white paper. The white elephant was created by origami artist Sipho Mabona, who wanted to prove that “there are no limits to what can be made out of a square piece of paper.” After a successful Indiegogo campaign, the artist gathered the required funds to bring his vision to life. Using a custom-made piece of paper that measured 15 square meters, the artist and up to 10 assistants carefully folded the large sheet to create the beloved animal in origami form. The process lasted several weeks and was filmed at the KKLB art museum in Gunzwil, Switzerland, where the artwork is on permanent display. The impressive sculpture stands at more than 3 feet tall and measures 250 kilograms, giving a new meaning to the ‘origami animals’ concept.
