Elegant, intricate and ethereal are certainly not the words anyone would use to describe cardboard, but they’re precisely the right words to portray Graypants’ new series of the popular Scraplights, made from corrugated cardboard. Graypants is a product design and architecture studio with offices in Seattle and Amsterdam.

Collaborating closely in the research and development stage, the two studios found the ideal blend of technology and design to bring the new series to life. This cardboard light collection follows on the footsteps of the successful first series, which was made of reclaimed materials and featured a natural darker color, but the Scraplights White range elevates the original concept to new heights of refinement. Manufactured using custom made corrugated cardboard which was precision cut on state-of-the-art machinery, the lamps and pendants feature a beautifully textured surface and a bright white tone, transforming the bland source material into gorgeous lighting designs. When the light is turned off, the shades appear pristine white with slightly darker lines accentuating the patterns on the surface; as the light turns on, the lamps become alive in shades of cream, pale yellow and apricot, the glow lending the material an ethereal appearance. Continuing on the environmentally-friendly approach of the first collection, the new lamps and pendants are crafted using custom FSC-certified paper; each item is handmade in Holland through a social works program that encourages people from the local community to take on craft-based careers. Designed to make living spaces more elegant, the Scraplights White Series provides a refined take on an ingenious concept. Available soon in the Gessato shop.
