Modernica Revives The Iconic Fiberglas Shell Chairs

Designed in 1948 for a competition held by the Museum of Modern Art, the first fiberglass shell chair defied all expectations and became one of the most recognizable designs in the world. Throughout the ‘60s, the chairs found their way into US homes, as well as into dwellings around the world. They became an iconic example of mid-century design and remain, even today, as popular as ever. Versatile and elegant, they blend into any contemporary décor seamlessly, proving that good design ages like good wine.

The production of the original fiberglass chair stopped in the late ‘80s. That’s when the licensed manufacturer switched to plastic. Los Angeles-based Modernica acquired the historic presses and equipment, aiming to keep the traditional manufacturing techniques alive while recreating the retro version of the beloved design. Using the same machines that produced the emblematic chairs, Modernica brought the authentic fiberglass shell seating to a new era. Beginning from 2000, each chair is handcrafted in the company’s Los Angeles factory. The fiberglass material has a distinctive look and feel, giving the seating an unmistakable retro charm.

Named Case Study®, the fiberglass shell chairs maintain the recognizable lines of the original. Celebrating the timeless aesthetic, Modernica offers a wide range of colors and base options, to suit any taste and décor requirement. From the classic Eiffel base and the minimalist H legs to the wooden rocker and the convenient dowel bases. The seating also comes in a multitude of colors, from refined gray and black to vibrant magenta and green. Now you can find the Case Study® chairs in our shop, in various styles and color tones. Paying homage to design history, fiberglass shell seating introduces an icon to a younger generation of design lovers while preserving its legacy alive. Buy here.
