NYC Urinal By Benjamin Nordsmark

Furniture maker, artist and designer Benjamin Nordsmark likes to create thought-provoking products and artworks. Apart from looking impressive, his work makes the viewer reflect. Sometimes it even challenges preconceived notions, while other times it stuns with an intricate design. Inspired by daily commutes on Big Apple’s subway system, NYC Urinal also pays homage to Duchamp’s Fountain, in a year that marks the 100th anniversary of the iconic artwork. “After pondering the shape of the seats, I quickly associated them to urinals and in combining these observations, the idea of the NYC urinal came to life,” explains Nordsmark.

The simple piece is straightforward and bold. Made of plywood with a finish that resembles plastic, the urinal recreates the classic shape of the subway seats and boasts an orange color. In another nod to the ‘Fountain’, the artist’s name appears scribbled on one side. If you’re in New York, you can see this artwork in person, among other fantastic pieces from a wide range of creators, at the Portal 2017 event that takes place in Soho between May 3 – May 8.
