Located in the former home of Noma – aka the restaurant that brought Nordic food in the global spotlight – this gem of interior design fills the iconic space with a fresh new identity. Acclaimed chef and restaurateur Thorsten Schmidt partnered with Noma chef René Redzepi and architecture studio Snøhetta to bring the Barr restaurant to life. The décor blends original features and new additions in a space which celebrates hygge and traditional craftsmanship as well as Northern design.

Throughout the interior, the décor features a tasteful play between old and new. The solid oak floor complements the textured surface of the original stone walls. Original beams on the ceiling contrast the new wooden planks which  also boast brass accents and integrated lights. The wooden counter connects two separate spaces. Traditional techniques, locally sourced wood and handmade furniture combine with natural materials, including timber, leather and wool. Apart from interior design, Snøhetta also created a new graphic identity for Barr, developing a custom typeface called Barr Gräbenbach.

Barr, which means “barley” in old Norse, offers a range of regional dishes and delicacies. It also focuses on food and drink traditions found across a wider area which includes Scandinavia, Germany and The British Isles. The restaurant opened its doors at the beginning of July 2017.
