In 2014, designers Jesse Reed and Hamish Smyth launched a Kickstarter campaign to print a limited-edition of the 1970 New York City Transit Authority Graphics Standards Manual. Not only did they achieve their initial goal, but the campaign actually surpassed it eight times over. A second campaign for the 1975 NASA Graphics Standards Manual almost reached the million-dollar mark. So the next step, of opening an independent publishing imprint and book store, followed naturally.

Located in Brooklyn, NYC, Standards Manual is one-of-a-kind. Apart from the aforementioned manuals, visitors can also browse through a curated list of vintage design books. The store carries manuals and books from many publishers, including Chronicle Books, Gary Hustwit, Hachette, Laurence King, Harper Collins, Hartley and Marks, Niggli, Phaidon, Prestel, Unit Editions, and Yale University Press. The available collection changes periodically, so visitors can always discover something new. A must-visit place for anyone who loves design and vintage manuals. Photographs© Standards Manual.
