The Intelligence of Objects

Italian journalist Elena Cattaneo is reporting on Design Week from Milan. Does the world really need something new? To try to answer this provocative question, José Dominguez and Leandro Leccese responded with few words, instead showcasing their designs because, as they explained, “we’re designers, not writers.” José and Leandro met while studying Industrial Design at the University of Buenos Aires, and, in 2011, they decided to combine their expertise and ...

Thom Fougere Furniture Design

Thom Fougere is a furniture designer based in the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Place informs his work, especially in the case of the Tyndall Table, a stone coffee table inspired by prairie topography and rich with fossil deposits. His other designs, from the Bench Rack to the Square Side Table, are made for maximum utility. Fulfilling two jobs, the Bench Rack hangs clothes and provides space for storage above ...

Treasure Table

Designed by Frederik Roijé of Amsterdam, the Treasure Table resembles a scientific sample jar. The side table displays one’s little pieces of treasure inside a base of handblown glass. Sealed with a top of natural brown or black cork, the table can protect valuable or delicate objects behind glass. Made in Holland, Roijé’s design comes in two sizes, one of which is large enough to hold a skull. Gather a ...

Pot.pourri Modular Home Decor

New from 3dotscollective, Pot.pourri is a modular design with Venezuelan and European influences. The metal components reference indigenous Venezuelan basket-weaving, and the concrete elements echo contemporary Europe’s industrial aesthetic. Together, the ten pieces form bowls, vases, and hanging lamps in 100-plus variations. The designers’ vision is now on display at Milan Design Week, showing at the Ventura Team-Up at Via Dei Canzi 19 from April 8-13.

Glass and Wood from the Northern Shores of Finland

From far Northern Europe, Maija Puoskari’s glasswork arrives in Milan. I found her work at one of the many small stands of the Salone Satellite, a stand which gathered all the young designers, mostly foreigners, and those still poorly understood. There, I read the biography of Maija, who I think is perhaps little known here in Italy. The designer was born in northern Finland, in Tornio. Most recently, she studied ...

Arne Jacobsen Drop Chair Revival by Fritz Hansen

A mid-century modern classic, the Drop Chair was originally designed by Arne Jacobsen for  Copenhagen’s Radisson SAS Royal Hotel. Soon to be released on the market, the newly revived design by the Republic of Fritz Hansen will be on display at Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi 77 for Milan Design Week. Like the iconic design, the Fritz Hansen remake features a droplet-shaped back. The new Drop Chair comes in chrome or powder-coated ...

Bambi Chair: A Little Friend from the Forest

Italian journalist Elena Cattaneo is reporting on Design Week from Milan. This is her first post for GBlog. Stemming directly from the fairy tales that impressed our small hearts the most, the Bambi is an inspired chair for children. We can rest assured that no animal was harmed to make this vision reality; the seat is upholstered in nylon and the base and back are made of solid European oak ...

HARDWARE by Buster + Punch

Designed by Buster + Punch, an interiors brand based in London, HARDWARE is a new line of metal furniture handles. The pieces include handles, knobs, and buttons, all made of solid brass, stainless steel, or anodised satin black aluminium. The Bride by Mammalampa

Designed by Latvian studio mammalampa, the Bride is a collection of lamps inspired by bridal style. The series includes ceiling lamps in medium and large sizes as well as smaller table and floor variations which stand on white and golden legs. Braided like formal hair or folds of fabric, each paper lampshade is handcrafted and unique. Delicately diffusing light, the Bride collection is intended for indoor use. The designs are ...

Precious Bowl by Didier Versavel

Designed for Meilleur Ouvrier de France by Didier Versavel and carpenter Jean Marc Estaque, this handcrafted bowl is part of Versavel’s tableware series Precious. The decorative bowl shines with a jewel-tone corner of red or yellow fluorescent plexiglass. The rest of the bowl is made of solid oak, a natural complement to the bright, artificial material. Brought together in one geometric design, the plexiglass and the wood complement one another ...
